A true crime account of the old-school New York Police Department from the detective who helped catch the Son of Sam and waged a one-man war against the Mafia.
In 1978, a gang war erupted in New York City, and the five boroughs ran red with blood. Men with names like “Matty the Horse” and “Tony Ugly” were found dismembered in garbage dumps, dead on the roadside in the far reaches of the Bronx, or suffocated in the trunks of cars parked at LaGuardia Airport. For years, the New York Police Department hadn’t bothered to investigate Mafia murders, preferring to let the mob handle its own bloody affairs—but that was about to change. The NYPD was going to war with the Cosa Nostra, and Det. Joseph Coffey would lead the charge.
A hard-nosed veteran of the force, Detective Coffey took down some of the highest-profile organized-crime associations of the 1970s, from the conspiracy between the Mafia and the Catholic Church known as the Vatican Connection to the homegrown terrorists who called themselves the Black Liberation Army. In 1977, when the city was terrorized by serial killer David Berkowitz, better known as the Son of Sam, Coffey led the NYPD’s nighttime operations as they worked to lure the murderer into a trap. But the war against the mob would be his greatest challenge—one that would take him right into the heart of gritty, dangerous NYC.
Cowritten by New York Daily News veteran Jerry Schmetterer, Coffey’s work is crime reporting at its finest. Fans of the two-fisted journalism of Jimmy Breslin and New York stories like The French Connection will find The Coffey Files has the thunderous intensity of a runaway subway train.

The Coffey Files One Cop War Against the Mob eBook Joseph Coffey Jerry Schmetterer
Joe Coffey outlines his life as a detective, from his 38th St and 3rd Ave elevated located apartment with his parents, till his retirement from NYPD and beyond that to the federal prosecutors on organized crime. His career was to say the least, stellar in a world of professionals. Their green eyed tactics of professional rivalry were something extra to work against, besides the high level mobsters he arrested and brought to justice. He lived his life as a crusade, knowing he was entrusted by the public to bring down the worst of the worst, people who thought themselves untouchable. He sent them to jail, and quickly dispels any starry eyed notions about the so called celebrities of the mob, as being nothing than crumbs which he treated of them as like.Product details

The Coffey Files One Cop War Against the Mob eBook Joseph Coffey Jerry Schmetterer Reviews
Very interesting book
interesting
Interesting enough, but Coffey comes across as Batman.
Excellent writing; good information that explained the inside story on the actors in certain crime; it was good to see the celebration of a dedicated police officer. Officer Coffey passed too soon.
The book was well written and held my interest from beginning to end. Many of the problems caused by the mafia still exist. Because of men like Joe Coffey, we can sleep at night knowing that in time, justice will be served.
A great book by a great cop. This is one of those wake up at 3AM and read a couple more chapters to see what happens next.
If you remember these times as I do this book is especially interesting, not just for the crime fighting, but the politics in the NYPD and DA office.
Don't pass this one up.
Excellent book! Det. Coffey was a serious man doing a serious job. He cracked some of the most important mob related cases during the 1970s and 80s. The decline of the Italian mob can be traced to greed on the part of the mobsters, their treachery to their underlings, RICO, and Detective Joe Coffey!
